She Always Chose the Window Seat

Before the Trips

Kavya Bhalla was a student at Delhi Public School North, Bangalore. She was capable and curious but reserved, the kind of student who does not always surface easily in a classroom environment. The social dynamics of school, the fixed roles, the pressure of being seen and evaluated in front of peers, made it difficult for her to build confidence at the pace she needed. She was not going to find herself in a classroom. She needed to be somewhere else entirely.

The Window Seat Was Always Hers

Between 2015 and 2017, Kavya travelled with The Modern Classroom on four separate programs, to the USA, the UK, France, Switzerland, Australia, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Each one put her in unfamiliar situations that required her to make decisions, navigate new environments, and function independently of the routines and relationships that school and home provide. Across all four trips, one thing never changed. Kavya always wanted the window seat. She watched the clouds. She watched aircraft rise above cities. She watched the world become smaller beneath her. She thought she was just looking outside. She was actually working out where she wanted to go.

The Quieter Kind of Confidence

Kavya did not come back from her first trip transformed. Confidence does not work that way. But across four programs and several years, something shifted. She learned to navigate new countries, new routines, and new social situations without the safety net of familiar faces and fixed roles. When she later reflected on those years, she called it the quieter kind of confidence. Not the need to be the loudest in the room. The confidence to participate, to travel, to speak, and to trust her own judgement.

Travel also changed something socially. On one of the journeys, Kavya met a student two or three years younger than her, someone she would never have crossed paths with in the normal course of school life. More than a decade later, that person remains one of her closest friends. Travel changes the social boundaries students live inside. Some friendships form and fade with the trip. Some last for years. Kavya found one that lasted.

The Parent Behind the Student

There is a part of Kavya's story that does not belong only to her. Her parents made these opportunities possible. Kavya remembers periods when things at home were not always easy. Yet whenever a trip came up, her father reassured her. "Don't worry, beta. I've got you covered." And he did. He made sure she could go, again and again. Behind many young people who eventually step confidently into the world, there is often a parent who first decided to let them step away from home.

She Flies Now

Years after her last program with us, Kavya completed her aviation training with one of the world's largest carriers. She called to say she was now a second officer and would be flying from Bengaluru to Delhi. Then she sent her flight ticket. She wanted us to be part of the moment. The Modern Classroom did not make Kavya a pilot. That would be an unfair claim. Kavya did the hard work. Her parents backed her. Her training, discipline, and determination took her into the cockpit. But travel gave her something early: a view through a window that stayed with her long after she landed. Eventually she stopped being the passenger looking out. She became the person at the front of the aircraft.
